Sean Rice is just back from competing at the Pennypinchers Easter Surfski Challenge in Plettenberg, South Africa. In a seriously red hot field, (including current Doctor Champion, Jasper Mocke, and World Marathon Champion Hank McGregor, World Series Champion Dawid Mocke amongst other big names), Sean managed to win on his Uno Max Elite. I grabbed him for a few quick words after the race:

“Thanks. It was an exciting race. 2 x 9km laps. What made it interesting was a 200m portage over a sand dune into an estuary and of course the surf while exiting the mouth of the estuary every time. Surf was decent but no wind on the ocean.

There was a strong field including Hank, Jaspe, Dawid, Kenny, Brandon van de Walt to name a few. I took a beating on the portages but managed to paddle back onto the lead group every time. My moment came when Jasper and I had broken away during the last half of the 2nd lap. Going out the mouth for the last time Jasper opted to run over a sand bank while I stayed in the main channel. This got me a 5m Lead that I was able to hold to the end. All in all I’m very happy with this result as its the first Penny Pinchers Surfski Challenge where I haven’t had some kind of misfortune. Honestly every year I seem to break a rudder off, get beaten in the surf or something like that ha ha.. This year I was lucky I guess.

Sean is in training now for the EuroChallenge in Spain, where he returns as defending champion. It should be an awesome event with some big names on the roster, including his Junior World Champion brother, Kenny Rice. Go hard boys!
